Your Guests Have The Right to be Entertained...
When it comes to parties and events there are two (2) main misconceptions.
Misconception One:
Just because you have organised a few or group of people to get together at a central location that they will all automatically have a good time.
Misconception Two:
As the organiser, just because you are excited by the event, your guests will share the same amount of enthusiasm and blind excitement.
So let me paint a common scenario for you.
Jill and John (not their real names) are hosting a home party to celebrate Johns 40 th Birthday. The guest list includes a myriad of people that come from Johns work and social circles. Of the 100 plus people invited, there are close and extended family from Jill and John’s (not their real name) sides, as well as a few social and work colleagues of Jill.
There are a majority of people who don’t actually know John personally, and are attending the function solely due to the fact that their partners have been invited. These are the people that are really not that excited that John is 40 th. They have been to 40 th Birthdays before, they have been to other boring backyard functions, and they are thinking that they would rather be somewhere else on this particular night. They are the misconception two people.
Misconception one is incredibly obvious to the point, that I am continually surprised why people continue to ignore the consequences. It is this misconception that I would like to delve into more closely.
Just because you gather a group of people together – ‘for the promise of a good time’, organise a little bit of food and alcohol, and turn the music up loud, they instantly and miraculously will have a goodtime.
Your guests have the right to be entertained, and be creative.
I recently went to a party where there was a hired fortune teller who sat upstairs and gave free readings. You should have seen the line up to get into see her. More importantly it gave everybody a talking point, people who have never met had a common point to converse about.
Live bands are great and create a great atmosphere but can cause troubles with your neighbours. A singer is always a great break of pace for an event or party – don’t be afraid to spend a couple of hundred dollars to get a singer in to do a set.
But entertaining your guests doesn’t just have to be about putting on a show for them. You can do it in other forms such as ensuring there are a number of activities to partake in. Depending on the event inflatable games such as big glove boxing, the joust, sumo suits provide not only entertainment to those participating but endless laughs to those watching.
Entertainment can be in the form of karaoke – but becareful how and when you do this. A professional Karaoke Master is always recommended as they control the flow of the evening and provide a little comic relief at time.
Hosting a party you have repsonsibibilities – you would not invite guests over tell them where the fridge is, put a plate of chips, crackers and cheese in front of them and ignore them all night – and then expect them to have a good time – or would you.
